Former Mayor Dennis Meredith stepped in at the last minute to speak about his life and new book at a Women’s Institute (WI) meeting last night.
At 83, Dennis has recently completed the second part of his autobiography, From Street Urchin to Mayor, which chronicles remarkable aspects of his life. He began writing his autobiography at the age of 80, and he shared that sales of his first book have been very successful.

At the talk, Dennis recounted his early childhood experiences of growing up in war-torn London, including the harrowing times he spent living in the London underground during the Blitz. He also opened up about his struggles with dyslexia and how modern IT technology has allowed him to overcome challenges with spelling and to write his books.
Dennis explained that his motivation for writing his autobiographies was to inspire young people to face life’s challenges with resilience.
“Looking back at the deprivations of my early childhood, I never thought I would end up being Mayor,” he said.
While working on his autobiography, Dennis discovered a newfound talent for storytelling. Inspired by this revelation, he has embarked on an exciting new project: writing a romance novel.
The story centres on a nurse working in a care home who, being of a certain age, has resigned herself to the belief that love is no longer in the cards. However, life takes an unexpected turn as she finds herself entangled in not one, but two passionate affairs. To her astonishment, she falls head over heels in love with a soap star, sparking a journey of self-discovery, romance, and the reminder that it’s never too late for love.
He noted that the book is aimed at a female audience and shared this announcement directly with the women of the WI.
The evening also included discussions about upcoming WI events, such as a group trip to the Deco Theatre and participation in a murder mystery radio show. The group leader enthusiastically encouraged members to get involved in these activities, reflecting the WI’s growing popularity.
