Tucked within the picturesque Billing Garden Village, what began as a paving and landscaping centre has grown into a flourishing, family-run garden destination serving its community for nearly two decades.
Nene Valley Paving and Garden Shop was opened in 2007 by James and Sarah. As the business expanded, their son Luke joined the team, along with long-standing team member Dave, and more recently, Steve.
The business has grown from focusing on aggregates and paving to include a thriving garden centre, now in its second full season.
“We’d always focused on landscaping materials,” says James. “But when the garden centre at Billing closed, there was nothing local for people. We saw an opportunity and decided to create something smaller, but really useful for the community.”

Eighteen months ago, the team redeveloped part of their existing site, introducing new shop spaces and a dedicated outdoor garden area. Starting with a modest range, the garden centre has already expanded significantly, with this spring marking its strongest season yet.
Bedding Plants in Northamptonshire – Fresh Weekly Stock
At this time of year, bedding plants take centre stage, says James.
Sourced from nurseries across the UK and delivered fresh each week, they’re proving especially popular as customers fill pots, borders and hanging baskets.

“It’s all about bedding plants right now,” James explains. “People are getting their gardens ready, and as soon as the weather improves, we really notice them coming to stock up on our plants. ”
Around 80 per cent of the plants are grown in the UK, with a small number sourced from abroad to ensure variety. Alongside plants, the centre offers a wide range of gardening essentials, including compost, fertilisers, tools, garden furniture, stoneware, garden tools and even bird food. Sustainability is a growing focus, with peat-free composts forming a key part of the range, including trusted names like Levington.

Despite the expansion into retail, the business’s landscaping roots remain at its core.
Aggregates and Gravels – Landscaping Essentials
Aggregates and gravels continue to be top sellers, particularly lighter-coloured stones such as Cotswold chippings and pale, marble-style gravel, which surge in popularity as soon as the sun appears.
“When the sun comes out, we see a demand for lighter-coloured stones compared to the darker ones during the Winter months.”

Bulk bags are especially popular, alongside paving slabs, rockery stones, fencing and sheds, for larger garden projects. Compost, turf and driveway gravel continue to sell well too.
Like many independent businesses, rising costs have presented some challenges. Global events have pushed up the price of materials and transport, something the team is navigating carefully while keeping prices as competitive and low as possible.
“We’re not enjoying that side of things,” James admits. “But we always try to offer the best value we can.”
The business has built a loyal customer base over the years, and the addition of the garden centre has only strengthened those relationships. The business has developed a reputation for quality products, competitive prices and expert advice, which James is keen to continue.
With other independent local garden centres closing in recent years, more customers are discovering the site and returning regularly.
“It’s nice to see familiar faces coming back more often,” says James. “And we’re also welcoming new customers who used to go elsewhere.”
In a retail landscape increasingly dominated by large chains, this independent, family-run approach is part of what sets the business apart.
Surrounded by other local businesses in Billing Garden Village including two cafes, a quality butcher and hairdressers, and close to popular walking routes, the site has also become a destination in its own right—whether for a quick visit or a leisurely afternoon.
With fresh stock arriving weekly and a growing reputation in the community, this Northamptonshire garden centre is firmly putting down roots.
“We’ve got everything you need for your garden,” says James. “And we’re always happy to help.”
