Getting the Garden Winter-Ready
Our gardening columnist, Dennis Meredith, recently gave an engaging talk at Abington Community Library, where he reminded local gardeners that there are still plenty of jobs to tackle before winter sets in.
From leaf mould to lawn care, now’s the time to tidy, feed, and prepare your garden for a healthy start next spring, he said.

As we are approach winter, the gardening year isn’t over yet. There are still plenty of things we can do in the garden to keep us busy.
Creating Leaf Mould
First, grab some black bags and collect some of the fallen leaves that are now covering the ground. Put the leaves into the bags, punch a few holes in the bag and tie them up at the neck. These can be stored somewhere in the back of the garden. By Spring, you’ll have lovely leaf mould to use for improving your soil.

You may also notice a few bulbs are poking their heads through the soil. That is a good sign and means they are in good condition.

Deadhead to Prevent Rot
Make sure to deadhead your roses and cut back long stems, trimming them to about halfway. This helps prevent the wind from loosening the roots and causing rot at the base.
Take a look at the plants in your borders – you may be able to divide some of them before Spring and replant them in any spare spaces.
Clear out any weeds that are growing and give the beds a good hoe before the cold weather sets in.
Feed the Lawn
Now is the time to give your lawn an autumn feed, which you can find from at any garden centre. Sprinkle it over the grass to keep your lawn lush and healthy when Spring arrives.
Finally, check your lawnmower to see if it needs servicing, and clean any tools you’re not using. This helps prevent the spread of disease to your plants.
You’re never too old to enjoy gardening. Dennis reveals that his love for gardening took hold from a very young age.
