Northampton’s thriving poetry scene was in the spotlight on Sunday as the town crowned its new Bard at the annual Bardic Picnic, held this year at Coconut Paradise Café, making a fitting celebration for National Poetry Day.
National Poetry Day, a UK-wide celebration encouraging the reading, writing, and performance of poetry, provided the perfect backdrop for the crowning of Northampton’s new Bard.
The title of 14th Bard of Northampton was awarded to Willow Johns, a fresh voice on the local spoken word circuit who gave their debut performance at Kettfest just three months ago. Willow succeeds Esther Stimpson, also known by her performance name Poetic License, who served as the 13th Bard.

This year’s competition showcased a particularly strong field, with fellow finalists Quinton Green and Abbi Jinks impressing audiences. The judges praised the high standard of work across the board, noting the depth of talent within Northampton’s poetry community.

The celebratory afternoon blended poetry, music, and community spirit. Performances came from Nathan Jones, Kezzabelle, and musicians LogOn Kjb, Coda Rushing, and Jimtom, alongside a lively open mic. The event was hosted by Word Guerrilla, with organisational support from Tamsyn Payne and outgoing Bard Esther Stimpson.
Guests were also treated to Caribbean food from Ash of Coconut Paradise Cafe. https://www.thecoconutparadise.com/.
Northampton’s Bardic tradition, founded in 2005, celebrates spoken word, storytelling, and performance, with each Bard taking on the role of cultural ambassador for a year. The Bard is expected to champion creativity across the county and help keep the town’s poetic voice alive.
Congratulations to Willow as she begins her Bardic tenure.
