A Northamptonshire peer support group for mothers and female carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is branching out into the creative arts to offer new forms of expression and support.

Northants SEND Mummas, co-founded by Shumi Plastow and Emma Briggs, has long championed the wellbeing of SEND families, offering monthly wellness events, breakfast meetups, and stay-and-play sessions for children during the summer holidays.
Shumi said: “Northants SEND Mummas was originated by myself Shumi Plastow and my good friend Emma Briggs. As mothers of SEND children we have always strived to offer experiences where participants feel nurtured and have opportunities to discover their own interests. We started by offering a safe space for mothers/female carers through our wellness events and breakfast meet ups.
The SEND community is a beautiful strong group of people fighting for the best education and support for their children.”
Now, the group is introducing new creative workshops aimed at both carers and young people with SEND.

The initiative began with a therapeutic clay workshop led by “The Connected Therapist,” where participants were encouraged to mould clay as a way of expressing their emotions.
“It became a cathartic experience for the group of ladies who participated and a few tears were shed as they expressed their deepest feelings for their children,” said Shumi. “It was actually deeply moving to see a group of women connect with their feelings through clay.”
Inspired by the positive response, the group reached out to Lumina Arts Alliance, a local creative collective known for running innovative workshops for young people. Lumina agreed to host two tailored sessions for SEND teenagers and young adults—one focusing on makeup and blending, and the other on photography.

“This opportunity reminded me how important it is not to underestimate young people with SEND,” Shumi added. “There are so many talented individuals who deserve a chance to express the magic inside their minds.”

Now countywide, their aim is to create a safe, nurturing space for mothers and female carers, while also building bridges with other organisations that share their values of community, creativity, and mental wellness.
The group meets in various locations across Northamptonshire including Coconut Paradise Cafe and the Link Cafe in Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Events are due to be held at the Pod in Button Latimer, the Micado pheasant and Wicksteed park.
